A RADIO host who was openly critical of his nation’s government has been assassinated during a live broadcast.

Gleydson Carvalho was shot three times in the head and chest by two gunmen who forced their way into his recording studio.

“They came to the station’s facility and said that they had to make an announcement”, Police Chief Herbert Silva said.

Carvalho worked at Radio Liberdade FM in the city of Camocim, Ceará. The popular journalist, who received death threats in the past on social media, was a staunch voice against government corruption.

Police said they have arrested two people with ties to the main suspect in the case, and have recovered what they believe to be the murder weapon.

“The most serious threats he received were to do with politics”.

Carvalho is the fourth journalist to be killed in Brazil this year for his work, according to CPJ. “It is crucial for the authorities to ensure full accountability for the killing of Carvalho and other journalists to guarantee that reporters in Brazil can work without fearing for their lives”. In May, following the murders of two journalists in less than a week, the National Association of Newspapers denounced a “climate of impunity” in Brazil that fosters repeated violations of freedom of expression. In May, Evany José Metzger, a blogger, was found decapitated in the state of Minas Gerais, and the body of another radio journalist, Djalma Santos da Conceição´s, was discovered on May 23, a day after he was kidnapped in Bahia.
