“This measure is in no way against democracy, the law and freedoms”, he added. The emergency rule was gradually lifted by 2002.

During the uprising by a faction of the military, warplanes fired on government buildings and tanks rolled into the streets of major cities before the rebellion was put down by forces loyal to the government and civilians who took to the streets.

Pro Erdogan supporters wave Turkish flags during a rally at Kizilay Square in Ankara on July 20, 2016, following the failed military coup attempt of July 15.

More than 200 people have been killed as a result of the coup attempt.

“This parliament has seen plenty of coups but none of the coups have dropped bombs on parliament”, Yildirim said, referring to the previous attempts to seize power launched by the army since 1960 and the 1997 bloodless coup.

The swift move against so many reflected the prior investigation, the government said.

Turkey’s government said followers of Fethullah Gulen, a 75-year-old Islamic preacher in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania, in the military and other branches of government attempted the coup.

“I have been told that people in the presidential palace are even trying black magic to bring about my death”, Mr Gulen said.

Turkey has repeatedly named Gulen as the instigator of its turmoil and demands his extradition from the United States.

In an address to the nation on Wednesday night, Mr Erdogan announced a cabinet decision to seek additional powers, saying the state of emergency would give the government the tools to rid the military of the “virus” of subversion.

Turkey’s domestic situation is increasingly a concern as the government seeks to rid broad sectors of society of alleged antagonists. In a reference to the coup plotters, he said: “I just want this country to be rescued from those dishonorable people”.

In addition, 8,777 Interior Ministry employees have been sacked, as well as 1,577 university deans.

“To suggest that the U.S.is harboring Mr. Gulen is factually incorrect”, Earnest told reporters Monday. “There will be no restriction of movement other than for the suspects”, Simsek said.

The meeting participants will also discuss reinstating the death penalty in the country.

A statement from the Turkish embassy in Ottawa said its government has “solid proof” that Gulen’s organization staged the coup. “They said on television that some of the privates were innocent”, Ay said.

The instability is hurting confidence in the Turkish economy.

The lira hit a 10-month low in early trade on Wednesday, touching 3.063 to the dollar.

In testimony published by the Hurriyet newspaper and corroborated by a Turkish official, an infantry lieutenant-colonel said the coup plotters had tried to persuade military chief Hulusi Akar, who was being held hostage, to join the effort to overthrow Erdogan but that he had refused.
