Law enforcement officer ambush: One officer remains in the hospital
Louisiana State Police Superintendent Colonel Mike Edmonson said there was no doubt that the dead and wounded officers were intentionally targeted and assassinated. “It was a calculated act”.

The city has been riven by protests since the July 5 police killing of Alton Sterling, but authorities said they were not sure whether Long was inspired by that event – or a gunman’s deadly ambush of police officers in Dallas last week.
Long briefly mentions Sterling but says he wasn’t there for the demonstrations that followed that shooting.
“Each fallen officer is one too many”, the president writes. Two other officers were injured.
The Sacramento Police Department has reinstated mandatory two-officer patrols after the fatal shooting of three officers in Baton Rouge on Sunday.
Garafola and Gerald were white. Jackson was black, as was the gunman.
Long and Johnson did not know each other, Omoruyi said, though Long praised the Dallas attacker, saying “at least he did something”. Police say he lived 29-year-old Gavin Long.
The email was time-stamped less than an hour before Long was first spotted by police carrying a gun and clad all in black.
It was the fourth high-profile deadly encounter in the United States involving police over the past two weeks.
“It was all rants and raves”, Edmonson said. As police and deputies arrived, Long methodically worked his way around the side of a beauty salon, where he saw two Baton Rouge police officers.
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) – The man who ambushed and killed three law enforcement officers in Louisiana purportedly described his actions as a “necessary evil” in a self-described, handwritten manifesto that an OH man says was emailed to him by the gunman less than an hour before the shootings.
“We trying to determine if had anybody on the ground in Baton Rouge assisting him”, Edwards said. Jose Jackson, the father of 10-year police veteran Montrell Jackson, and Sandra Sterling, aunt of Alton Sterling, joined together Tuesday evening to share their grief and pray for the future of their beloved city, according to local news broadcaster WWLTV. “Our hope is going to lie in concrete actions…to address the systemic issues that bring forth violence in our city and in our lives”, said Rev. Synder. “Police officers need to get out of their cars and have one-on-one conversations with people in their community”, said the Rev.
Documents show that Long sought to change his name previous year to Cosmo Setepenra. Surveillance footage captured Long moving toward the marked police auto, the rifle held ready to fire. Washitaw Nation is a black nationalist movement that was once targeted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The founder’s son said he didn’t know Long and the group doesn’t espouse violence.
Other details about the gunman were revealed Monday.
While in the military, Long was awarded several medals, including one for good conduct, and received an honorable discharge. Long got an associate of arts degree in general studies from the college, school records show. Investigators say they had no connection to the shooting.

As the city mourns, a coalition of churches is proposing a plan to bridge long-standing mistrust between police and Baton Rouge’s African-American community.
