A 17-year-old hiker from Tempe was struck by lightning on Humphrey’s Peak Wednesday and is dead.
The hikers said they were somewhere near the summit of Humphreys Peak.
The severe and continuous lightning strikes on the peak led emergency responders to stage themselves at a lodge in Flagstaff. Located just north of Flagstaff, the peak is the highest point in Arizona, at more than 12,600 feet above sea level.
“It’s the middle of our monsoon season here”.
The hikers reported that at least one person was unresponsive, according to the post. “Some hikers did get caught in that today”, said Erika Wiltenmuth, a spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Office.
Due to the extreme weather in the area emergency crews are waiting to attempt a rescue.
