According to the Northern Echo, Subotic’s move to the newly promoted Premier League side is now in huge doubt with it unlikely that Boro will revive their efforts to sign the Serbian global.

Serbian centre-half Subotic was expected to join Negredo on the pre-season camp, until the Bundesliga club announced he had failed a medical.

However, recent reports from England suggested the deal had collapsed due to a physical problem that came to the fore during his medical.

But Karanka has been left frustrated in his hopes of landing Subotic, who is known to have been impressed by what he has heard and seen during his time being shown around the Teesside club’s facilities.

The Serbia global missed the end of the 2015/216 campaign after he was a diagnosed with thrombosis in his arm.

Subotic would have been an exciting signing ahead of Middlesbrough’s return to the top-flight, and the club will now be looking for other defensive reinforcements ahead of the visit of Stoke on August 13.
