Comic-Con 2016: Google Debuts Digital Comics Feature ‘Bubble Zoom’

At San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, the internet giant unveiled a new feature for Google Play Books that automatically enlarges speech bubbles when you push the volume control buttons on your phone or tablet. It identifies texts, shapes, objects and images and the power is now probably the best reason to buy digital comics from Google.

Google added, “It’s much easier to read digital comics one-handed as Bubble Zoom automatically identifies and expands each speech bubble for readability”.

Google and the team behind the Android operating system have been exploring several alternatives to Guided View, including last year’s introduction of a “Vertical Scrolling” featuring. Announced as part of Comic-Con, Bubble Zoom uses machine learning to magnify text bubbles in digital comics. All of this happens without compromising on the full-page experience and making users pan around to see the entire comic. Called Bubble Zoom, this feature intelligently recognizes text bubbles inside of digital comics, allowing users to follow a storyline more interactively.

Google said that Bubble Zoom is a technical preview and that “this exclusive experience is only the first step”. Google says it hopes to eventually bring the feature to “all the comics and manga ever made”. Google is also celebrating this preview with a 50% off sale on select DC Comics and Marvel comics in the Google Play Store – just use the code SDCC2016 by July 24th, 2016.
