Von Miller becomes NFL’s highest paid defensive player

Miller is the highest paid Non-QB in National Football League history and he rightfully deserves it after a monster Super Bowl 50 MVP performance and 5 strong years in Denver as he has racked up 60 sacks in his career so far, easily making him one of the premier pass rushers in the NFL.

Despite speculation over a rift between Von Miller and John Elway, a fellow Super Bowl MVP, it would appear all is well in Dove Valley once again.

The New York Jets pulled off a last-minute stunner, signing the Pro Bowl defensive end to a five-year extension and beating the deadline after which Wilkerson would have had to play this season under the franchise tag amount of $15.7 million. The deal will also include $70 million guaranteed, a huge breakthrough considering Miller initially rejected a June offer, which he felt was a low-ball move.

Miller and Broncos finally came to an agreement on a six-year, $114.5 million deal with $70 million guaranteed.

Von Miller of the Denver Broncos is presented to the media for the first time with John Elway on April 29, 2011 at team headquarters.

Still, he’s absolutely earned his new windfall. He reached what Broncos coach Gary Kubiak called a “dominant level” of play in a postseason run that included five sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception in the team’s three postseason games.

“Von’s earned this contract not only for what he’s done in the past but for what we believe he’ll do in the future”, Elway said in a statement. Now Elway is counting on Miller not just to be the team’s best player, but to become the face of the franchise following the retirement of quarterback Peyton Manning.

However, this is not the first time the Broncos waited until the franchise tag deadline to lock up one of their players. “I know that the window for playing is closing”. But if my window closes, I’m going to make sure I open up a thousand more opportunities for kids, to give them an opportunity to pick up where I left off. That’s where I’m at.

Brady will serve suspension • Tom Brady is giving up the legal fight on Deflategate, meaning the New England Patriots quarterback will miss the first four games of the season. The Broncos had no intention of trading Miller, who is a cornerstone player in the team’s defense.

The Broncos start training camp practices on July 28. The Denver Broncos celebrated their Super Bowl victory with a a parade and celebration on February 9, 2016 at the City & County Building.
