Southwest: issues causing cancellations, delays mostly corrected

Southwest said passengers on its flights Thursday should check their flight status and plan to arrive earlier than usual because longer-than-usual lines are expected as several passengers who were impacted Wednesday are rescheduled.

Southwest said it had multiple performance issues with technology systems as a result of an outage Wednesday afternoon, when 700 flights were canceled and hundreds more were delayed.

A day later, passengers at Norfolk International Airport waited in long lines to rebook flights.

Spokesperson Toni Herrera-Bast said at least two Southwest flights from Birmingham to Las Vegas and Houston were canceled today.

By 8 p.m. Central time, Southwest had canceled 17 flights, more than any other US carrier, and delayed more than 600, according to tracking service FlightAware.com.

They said they also could not buy tickets or check their flight status.

The team was traveling to St. Louis to take part in a national baseball tournament, but the kids – several still wearing their uniforms – ended up sleeping on the airport floor and chairs instead.

Southwest Airlines has announced that most of the computer glitches have been fixed.

“Southwest Airlines reduced the number of flights departing after 9:00 p.m”.

Hawkins said that systems were gradually coming back, but that it might take time before the airline could resume normal operations.

According to FlightAware.com as of 8:45 a.m. ET, there were 204 flights canceled for Thursday and another 113 flights delayed.

Customers were unable to check in for flights and gate agents had to manually issue boarding passes while the system was offline, causing many flights to be delayed and, in many cases, canceled.

The company said it will provide flexible re-booking for customers through Sunday. “We’ll continue to work individually with our affected customers to make this right”, an airline spokeswoman said in a statement Thursday morning.
