He didn’t. Instead, in one of the most remarkable moments in recent presidential convention history, Cruz gave a long speech that only mentioned Trump once and ended with an exhortation for Republicans to “vote your conscience”.
Texas Sen. Ted Cruz doubled down on his decision not to endorse Donald Trump for president in an impromptu interview Thursday, telling NBC News that Americans need to vote with the Constitution in mind.
“Freedom means Supreme Court Justices who don’t dictate policy, but instead follow the Constitution”, he added.
“And to those listening, please, don’t stay home in November”. I know that sounds really extreme, but it is really true. If he gives anything short of enthusiastic support I will be disappointed.
As Cruz wrapped up his speech without an endorsement, the crowd booed harder than ever before.
“Donald Trump looked magnanimous”.
Sen. Ted Cruz did little to unify the Republican Party Wednesday night.
“Theirs is the party that thinks ISIS is a JV team, that responds to the death of Americans in Benghazi with, ‘What difference does it make?'” Cruz said.
Just down the hall, Nick Weidenkopf, an alternate delegate from Dallas, stood wearing a cowboy hat and a convention pass signed by Ted Cruz.
Besides congratulating Trump for winning the primaries, Cruz launched a scathing attack on President Obama and the Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

“And if we choose freedom, our future will be brighter”, he said. One of Trump’s central themes in this campaign, said Weidenkopf, is to drop political correctness, and that’s what Trump got from Cruz Wednesday.
