Microsoft Expects To Miss Windows 10 Target of 1 Billion Users
As for Microsoft’s mobile division, if the company were to continue selling around 50 million Windows Phone devices following the launch of Windows 10, that target would have been met, explains ZDNet.

Of course, despite the lacking phone biz, Windows 10 adoption is steadily growing, and while they may not meet the target within the next three years, the company shouldn’t be too far off. I also understand that the bottom dropping out of Microsoft’s smartphone market probably led to their projections taking a significant hit, since Microsoft were probably counting on a substantial number of Windows 10 phones on the market contributing to the 1 billion goal.
Still, given the stagnant pace of PC/tablet sales, it’s a fair question to ask when – or if – Microsoft can still achieve that 1 billion device goal.
Almost a year after hitting the market, Windows 10 is now running on more than 350 million devices, according to Microsoft.
Microsoft was so confident that Windows 10 would take off like a rocket that it predicted the OS would be installed on 1 billion devices by the start of fiscal year 2018 next March.
“We’re pleased with our progress to date, but due to the focusing of our phone hardware business, it will take longer than FY18 for us to reach our goal of 1 billion monthly active devices”, Yusuf Mehdi, Corporate Vice President, Windows and Devices Group, said.
You’ll also need to have booked in your device for its upgrade before noon, so you can’t skip into the store five minutes before closing and expect to walk out with a Dell laptop.
If you’re planning to move to Windows 10, you’d better hurry up because the free upgrade offer ends in just 10 days, and every user who wants to make the switch after this deadline will have to pay the full price of the license. That push was boosted by the decision to make it available for free to users of Windows 7 and 8. Microsoft has used a variety of controversial tactics to get Windows 7 and Windows 8 users to upgrade.
