Garry is best known for creating the highly popular ’70s shows Mork & Mindy and Happy Days, and directing the hit films Pretty Woman and Beaches.
“Everybody knows how to cry but Julia has always been one of those great actresses who knows how to not cry and still make you think something has happened and she is great at that in this movie”.
He got a degree from Northwestern University and a job at the New York Daily News.
“There was a lot of censorship”, Marshall said.
Marshall brought some of the most memorable shows to television. Not to mention that his first leading man, Happy Days’s Ron Howard, is now an Oscar-winning director in his own right.
Marshall is credited for launching Anne Hathaway’s career with “The Princess Diaries” and its sequel. In the 2010s he had shifted to his holiday-themed romantic comedies including Valentine’s Day, New Year’s Eve and Mother’s Day, the last of which released just a couple of months ago. You forever changed my father’s life, and thus, mine.
Marshall is survived by his wife of 53 years, Barbara, and three children, including Scott, a film director.
“Seinfeld” actor Jason Alexander, who appeared in “Pretty Woman”, tweeted, “Garry Marshall gave me one of the best experiences I ever had in my career”.
Movie star Richard Gere said in a statement: “He was a mentor and a cheerleader. he had a heart of the purest gold and a soul full of mischief”.
The director began his entertainment career in the 1960s selling jokes to comedians and then moved on to writing for TV shows like Happy Days and Mork and Mindy, starring then newcomer Robin Williams. “His guidance influenced the entire course of my life….and I am not alone in feeling that way about the impact of Garry’s wisdom on those who were a part of his universe”.
