China eyes eight cruise ships to serve disputed South China Sea

In the Lao capital of Vientiane, Mr Kishida will discuss ways to strengthen cooperation with Asean and xchange views on regional and global affairs including China’s military buildup in the South China Sea, a senior ministry official said.
The American restaurant chain found itself the subject of demonstrations after the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague ruled that China had no jurisdiction over disputed islands in the South China Sea. On Wednesday, China’s third largest telecommunications carrier announced it was expanding its wireless capabilities to the man-made islands, which China calls the Nansha Islands, “in an effort to safeguard the country’s legal claim in the South China Sea and to improve communication services for local people”, according to the China Daily newspaper. Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Taiwan lay claim to parts of the sea, through which passes about US$5 trillion (S$6.76 trillion) of trade a year.
Countries competing to cement their rival claims have encouraged a growing civilian presence on disputed islands in the South China Sea. The first cruises from China to the Paracel islands were launched by Hainan Strait Shipping Co in 2013.
In a statement Friday, July 22, the DFA said, “The Secretary will share the Philippines’ perspectives on ASEAN community-building, the developments in the South China Sea and Korean Peninsula, and pressing issues of regional concern including violent extremism, trafficking in persons, illegal drugs, and climate change, among others”.

On July 12, the PCA issued the ruling on the case brought by the Philippines against China’s nine-dash line claim in the East Sea, saying China’s claims to historic rights for waters within the nine-dash line are contrary to the 1982 UNCLOS.
