The Quicken Loans Arena erupted in chaos when it became apparent that Cruz, who was also vying for the GOP nomination along with Donald Trump, was not going to endorse the billionaire businessman who locked up the nomination officially on Tuesday.

“And to those listening, please, don’t stay home in November”, he said.

“Vote for candidates up and down the ticket who you trust to defend our freedom and be faithful to the Constitution”, Cruz said.

Ted Cruz faced a volatile crowd as chants of “Endorse Trump” rang out during his remarks at the Republican National Convention.

CBS News’ Scott Pelley said Trump completely stole the room from Cruz when he walked in. Cruz wrapped up and left the stage to a deafening chorus of boos.

“Ted Cruz said you can vote your conscience, for anyone who will uphold the Constitution”, said Gingirich.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who had been a top vice presidential contender, was also scheduled to address the convention.

He said it’s crucial to elect Trump to protect the Second Amendment, “the sanctity of life” and other liberties. The campaign saw his remarks ahead of time and still wanted him to speak.

The Texas senator was one of the final three candidates seeking the Republican nomination in a heated primary election with Mr Trump and Ohio Governor John Kasich. And I just want to point it out to you.

Instead, the episode creates further questions about whether the party can come together and about Cruz’s decision to speak at the convention.

The extraordinary scenes show how split Republicans are following Mr Trump’s controversial campaign, and were at odds with the later claim by Mr Pence that it was a “united party”.

Cuccinelli said: “During the course of the speech, more and more people were coming down closer and closer to Heidi and (Ted Cruz’s father) Rafael”.

Donna Metz, Cruz’s 2016 Kansas state co-chairwoman, wore a sparkling red, white and blue hat and was jostled in the crowd as she made her way toward Cruz.

When Donald Trump announced his intention to run for president last June, most political pundits and members of the media didn’t think he had much of a chance at success. It’s time to fight for a new direction for America.

He estimated that about a third of their supporters are now “all-in for Trump, a third are like, ‘Gosh, I wish I didn’t have to, but I can’t stand Hillary, ‘ and a third are probably like, ‘I’m just going to wait and see how the campaign goes'”. Anti-Trump forces had unsuccessfully sought to make rules changes that would have unbound delegates and allowed them to vote as they wish.

Trump’s campaign had hoped that by the convention’s end, voters would look past the gathering’s rough start, including the plagiarism charge involving Melania Trump’s opening address.

No sign of Trump endorsement, but plenty of Cruz ambition
