After announcing her leadership challenge, Ms Eagle faced a backlash from Mr Corbyn’s supporters and moves for deselection by her constituency party.

Jeremy Corbyn has signalled that all Labour MPs – the vast majority of whom oppose him – will have to face reselection ahead of the next generation.

“I mentioned Jeremy in this interview only once, when I respectfully suggested that he had a challenge to reach out beyond his comfort zone and his own constituency to traditional Labour voters across the country”.

On Tuesday, high court master Victoria McCloud heard that Corbyn’s “personal interest in the subject matter of this litigation is pressing and obvious and distinguishes him from the general body of members represented by McNicol”.

Labour Party officials will spend the next month going through the new members, weeding out duplicates or those who do not share the party’s values, before the ballot papers are sent out.

Members and registered or affiliated supporters of the Hereford and South Herefordshire Labour Party are invited to join in the arguments as to the direction of travel of the Labour Party and who should lead it into the next general election to become the next Prime Minister.

“It is the duty and the responsibility of every Labour MP to get behind the party at that point and put it against the Tories for the different, fairer, kinder Britain that we can build together”. But the sitting MP will have an opportunity to put their name forward.

“But of course he is very welcome to come back and I hope he would because that has got to be the right way of doing things”.

More than 70% of Labour MPs have supported Mr Smith’s bid to oust Mr Corbyn, with the MP for Pontypridd receiving 162 nominations from his parliamentary colleagues. And they have changed since I first entered Parliament in 1983…

In an echo of the five “giant evils” identified by William Beveridge in the 1940s, Mr Corbyn will say: “Today what is holding people back above all are inequality, neglect, insecurity, prejudice and discrimination”.

“I think we have done that spectacularly well – we now have the largest membership we’ve ever had”.

He opened his comments by recounting the Labour’s electoral achievements in local elections, by-elections and mayoral elections, and said his campaign would not only set out how Labour can confront social ills in opposition, but also spell out ‘some of the measures the next Labour government will take to overcome them’.
