Doug Stone, of Box Office Analyst, predicted the remake might generate as much as $65 million over the weekend and up to $180 million domestically in its full domestic run.
As for “Ghostbusters”, the $46 million opening weekend represents the best showing so far for Feig and McCarthy and the best opening so far this year for a live-action comedy.
The Legend of Tarzan, starring Alexander Skarsgard and Margot Robbie, slipped down to the number three spot, making US$11.1 million.
Before the release of the film, Sony created a new production team called Ghost Corps, headed up by original “Ghostbusters” director Ivan Reitman. The film is among the most high-profile projects this year for its studio, Sony Corp.’sSony Pictures Entertainment. The stars that cast in the reboot movie include Kate McKinnon, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, Melissa McCarthy, Charles Dance, Michael Kenneth Williams and Chris Hemsworth.
And Finding Dory has become the top-grossing animated title of all time in North America with $445.5 million through Sunday. Critics generally liked the movie, and opening-weekend audiences gave it a “B+” grade, according to market-research firm CinemaScore.
Fans wait at the premiere of the film “Ghostbusters” in Hollywood, California U.S., July 9, 2016.
“Finding Dory” from Disney reached fourth-place overall with $11M across 3,536 locations.
“It passed Shrek 2’s” long-held record, set in 2004, of $441.2 million.
It’s tough to judge how well the current film’s story succeeds on its own merits, mostly because of the similarities to the 1984 film’s basic structure.

Mike And Dave Need Wedding Dates closes out the new top five with $7.5 million (£5.7 million). One point of concern is the release of “Bad Moms” in two weeks, which is also a comedy with an all-female cast.
