Body of 11-year-old boy pulled from Rotherham canal

Police were called to Stone Row Way, Parkgate at 7.05pm last night to reports of a person entering the water.

His body was retrieved from the water at 11pm after a four-hour search by specialist emergency service crews.

“Unfortunately it is aptly named.It’s a very unsafe pastime”.

Neighbours to Ali described him as “the bet little lad you could ever meet”.

“He will be missed round here by a lot of people'”.

Another said: ” I only met Subhaan once but I am absolutely heartbroken.

Stewart Nicholson of South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said that the investigation into the boy’s death was in early stages.

The body of an 11-year-old boy has been recovered from a canal in Rotherham, South Yorkshire Police has said.

Police received a report at around 7pm that a boy had been seen entering the canal, off Stone Row Way, but had disappeared soon after.

The press conference came after South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue chief Mr Willoughby, said: “We know that there was a group of boys swimming in the canal”.

His family have been informed and are being supported by officers.

Police said the boy was with around eight other young people when he went into the water. Unfortunately this boy lost his life.

He said f ormal identification is yet to take place and a post-mortem examination has not yet been carried out.

Asked about the rescue operation, he said: “Unfortunately, not all our firefighters are trained in specialist water rescue”.

A local group called One Community Rotherham said on Facebook that he went into the water to retrieve a friend’s trainer.

“They don’t even assess how deep the water is before they jump”.
