Ricciardo: Verstappen rise could be frightening

However Hamilton led the way in first practice on Friday morning and was 1.827 seconds clear of Ricciardo, albeit with Red Bull not using the super-soft tyres.

Mercedes looks to be in a league of its own this weekend but Ricciardo finished best of the rest behind the championship leader by six tenths.

Daniel Ricciardo has admitted to Sky Sports his relationship with Red Bull team-mate Max Verstappen could buckle under the strain of a head-to-head world championship fight.

“It [the gap to Mercedes] is genuine”.

“I would say today’s probably quite representative for now”.

But Ricciardo was much more optimistic about the battle behind the Silver Arrows cars, with Kimi Raikkonen finishing a whole second behind the Australian in the other Ferrari.

“Generally we’re in a pretty good position for a Friday”. But here the auto can be very strong and I’m looking forward to the weekend because so far the vehicle has been pretty strong, even on tracks where we didn’t expect it to be that strong.

“If we can keep our noses in front of Ferrari, that would be nice”.

Ricciardo claimed the second of his three grand prix victories in 2014 at the Hungaroring, and the characteristics of the circuit suit Red Bull. The track limits they have applied are good as those corners you can run four wheels off the track, it is nice they have got these loops and sensors that detect if we are going off.

“He’s been competitive and it hasn’t just been I’ve had all the bad luck and he’s had all of the good luck – he’s been quick and put himself there”. I still have a lot of confidence in the way I am driving and everything, so I know if I keep just working and doing what I believe I can do, then the result will come.
