While details are scarce, the Associated Press reports that McLean pled guilty to the assault in court yesterday (July 21).
McLean, 70, was arrested at his Camden, Maine home in January.
McLean addressed the situation shortly thereafter on Twitter, calling it “the very painful breakdown of an nearly 30-year relationship”.
Meanwhile, McLean’s attorney, Walter McKee, later maintained in an email sent to the newspaper that Patrisha’s statements were “provably false”. McLean initially pleaded not guilty to the charge. His lawyer says the punishment will be a $3,000 fine if he stays out of trouble for a year.
“Patrisha McLean, the singer’s wife for 30 years, has filed for divorce, citing adultery, cruel and abusive treatment, and irreconcilable differences”.
McLean’s hit “American Pie” was recorded and released in 1971 and was reportedly dedicated to late singer Buddy Holly.

McLean’s original manuscript and notes to “American Pie” sold at auction for $1.2 million past year.
