Livingston County resident recovering from West Nile
Boulder County Public Health officials urge residents to take necessary precautions to protect themselves.

Michigan Department of Health and Human Services spokeswoman Jennifer Eisner said this afternoon that the man is recovering from the mosquito-borne illness, while the state expects there to be more cases arising due to this summer’s weather conditions.
The Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department has received its first report of West Nile Virus, the department said Friday in a release.

“We are concerned that West Nile virus activity may significantly increase”, said John Chess, Water Quality Program Supervisor for the department.

West Nile virus is transmitted to humans from the bite of an infected mosquito. Apply insect repellents that contain the active ingredient DEET, or other EPA approved product to exposed skin or clothing, and always following the manufacturer’s directions for use.
Many people who are infected won’t develop any symptoms, which can include body aches, joint pain and diarrhea.
Wearing light-colored, long-sleeved shirts and long trousers when outdoors and applying insect repellent to clothing to help prevent bites. However, some become sick three to 15 days after exposure.

The new pools bring Frisco’s total to 13 pools that tested positive for West Nile virus this year. Severe symptoms of WNV are associated with encephalitis or meningitis, and may include: include stiff neck, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, muscle weakness, convulsions and paralysis.
