Trump formally names Pence as his running mate

Republican vice presidential running mate Indiana Gov. Mike Pence speaks following his introduction by Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump at the New York Hilton Midtown on July 16, 2016 in New York City. “Would you go in and say, ‘You crossed the line and I think you should apologize?'” After a back and forth, Trump said, not so convincingly, “I’d like him to, if he thinks I was doing something wrong”.

Trump bragged that an effort to block his path to the nomination at the Republican National Convention had recently failed.

Trump declares at an announcement event Saturday morning in New York, “What a difference between crooked Hillary Clinton and Mike Pence”.

“I think Thursday night’s a critical night for him, delivering a great speech, the balloon drop, the people in this country saying, ‘I can see Donald Trump being in the White House”.

Brandishing his running mate’s job-creating credentials, Trump – who pushed back against reports of indecision by deeming the governor “my first choice” – ticked through a list of statistics he said showed how Pence had pulled IN out of economic recession: an unemployment rate that fell to less than 5 percent on his watch, an uptick IN the labor force and a decrease IN IN residents on unemployment insurance. “But I have great confidence in law enforcement”, he said.

In an interview with CBS on Sunday, Trump said he would declare a war against the terror group if he becomes president and would deploy “very few” ground troops to fight it.

And that was exactly what Pence’s fans at home in IN expected.

Trump took the stage solo at 11:15 a.m. and launched into what was mostly his stump speech: ragging on Hillary Clinton, President Obama and trade. Pence, however, strongly backed NAFTA while serving in Congress.

Early in the afternoon, Republican leaders quickly approved the rules, rejecting shouts for a state-by-state roll call from the “Never Trump” movement.

And so Trump seemed to stick with his original plan: announce his veep pick Friday morning – only this announcement came via Twitter.

The Northeast might not be the most fertile ground for Republican candidates for national office, but New York, New Jersey and CT will be front-and-center at next week’s Republican National Convention.
