Trump, by Trump: Ivanka Trump’s dress in the spotlight
As a working mom, she may understand the importance of equal pay and child care, but it’s clear that her father certainly does not. And finally, the campaign promise: “As president, my father will change the labor laws that were put into place at a time when women were not a significant portion of the workforce”, Ivanka said.

Quality child care, affordable and accessible for all! Her mother, Ivana Trump, reportedly accused her father of rape in the 1990s – she recently disputed the claims – and was cheated on with Marla Maples.
Introducing her father Donald J. Trump before he accepted the Republican party’s nomination for the presidency, Ivanka Trump – mainstay alongside her father on the campaign trail, owner, and CEO of a namesake fashion line, Executive Vice President of the Trump Organization, and co-star of her father’s reality show The Apprentice – not only gave arguably the best speech of the entire Republican convention, but did so while also subtly promoting her own business.
Tellingly, Ivanka’s comments about working mothers were about that only – mothers.
“That is where she comes from and talks from”, Dowd said. “If I weren’t happily married and, ya know, her father…” Men spend more time with their children than ever before, but women, regardless of whether or not they work, still spend far more time on childcare and housework than men. He will fight for equal pay for equal work. It may not have been the chicest choice – the bold red outfit she sported earlier in the day made more of an impact – but it was a smart one.
Ivanka’s speech was important, and its focus on women’s needs laudable.
Hillary Clinton: “If fighting for women’s health care and paid family leave and equal pay is playing the woman’s card, then deal me in”. But that may have exposed some uncomfortable Trump clan hypocrisies.
Trump later issued a statement that he was “absolutely joking” and “making fun of himself for his tendency to date younger women”, according to USA Today.
And I can’t even start in with all the uncomfortably sexual stuff Donald Trump has said about his daughter over the years.
The address was clearly an attempt to build bridges for her father with women, and to a lesser extent minorities – two groups the GOP nominee has struggled to win over. We are distinct from children, despite the pervasive “women and children” rhetorical combo and the lesser social position it implies. Neither are those issues mentioned on his website.
By the speech’s conclusion, he had successfully rallied the crowd to some extent, and under other circumstances, his list of reasons why his father was running and who he is running for would have been rousing – but he decision to barely acknowledge the bombshell that Cruz had dropped on the convention seemed wholly inadequate.

The 34-year-old began her speech: “Like many of my fellow millennials, I do not consider myself categorically Republican or Democrat”.
