He said Najib knows his responsibility and had been doing to the best of his ability for the country.
Singapore’s central bank said on Thursday authorities have seized assets worth S$240 million in the course of their investigations in relation to various 1MDB-related fund flows for possible money laundering, securities fraud, cheating and other offenses.
The action by the Justice Department may strain diplomatic ties between the United States and predominantly Muslim Malaysia, which have flourished under Mr Najib.
“Regarding the US Department of Justice report on 1MDB, the MACC confirms that it is cooperating with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, as both parties have been working together before”.
A cabinet minister said on Thursday Malaysia has nothing to hide and that “1MDB has been the subject of an unprecedented politically-motivated attack, the objective of which was to unseat a democratically-elected head of government”.
The US suit alleges that over US$3.5 billion was misappropriated by unidentified Malaysians in transactions over several years using sham corporate vehicles and shell companies to divert funds for personal gain.
The DOJ complaint describes Riza as a relative of an unnamed “Malaysian Official 1” whose approval was needed for the fund’s financial commitments.
The fund was originally set up and managed by the Prime Minister Najib Razak of Malaysia.
“This is an indictment of the involvement of the prime minister and his government in the mismanagement and, well, stealing. of money that belongs to the people”, he said. “I think, who is, you can decide from the description of “Malaysian Official 1″ found in the report by the Justice Department in America”. He also remains firmly in political control of the country, thanks largely to the apparently unwavering support of ruling party members despite a few voices of dissent.
Meanwhile, Puteri Umno chief Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin also rapped the opposition’s double standard attitude as they would turn a blind eye when many quarters demanded Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who is also DAP secretary-general, to resign following the corruption charges he was facing.
Malaysia’s fragmented opposition parties have been in disarray over policy differences after winning the popular vote in the last general election in 2013.
