Investigation underway after Miami police officers shoots unarmed man

Kinsey was shot late Monday afternoon by a North Miami police officer who may have been aiming at an autistic man who was playing with a toy truck and not responding to orders to lay down on the ground.

Mr Kinsey, 47, said he was trying to coax his 27-year-old patient back to a facility from which he had wandered.

Police said they were responding to an emergency call about a man with a gun walking around and threatening suicide.

An officer then fired three times, striking Mr Kinsey in the leg, assistant police chief Neal Cuevas said.

The video shows Mr Kinsey lying down while trying to get his patient to comply.

“The movement of the white individual looked like he was getting ready to discharge a firearm into Mr. Kinsey”, said Miami-Dade police union boss John Rivera in a press conference today, attended by WSVN.

Police in Miami have defended the officer who shot an unarmed behavioural therapist, saying he missed his actual target – a man with learning difficulties.

It was soon followed by the death of Philando Castile, who was legally registered to carry a gun and told an officer that he had a weapon during a July 6 traffic stop in a St. Paul suburb.

In this case, Rivera said, the officer ended up wounding the man he was trying to save. “I assure you, we’ll get all the answers”, the police chief told reporters Thursday. “When I went to the ground, I went to the ground with my hands up”, Kinsey said, “and I am laying there just like this”. Social media users point out that Kinsey did everything black people are taught to do during a police encounter and still was shot for a reason no one knows ― not even the cop who pulled the trigger.

In an interview with the TV station, Kinsey said he was more anxious about his patient than himself during the incident.

CHARLOTTE- With tensions on the rise after recent shootings across the country, law enforcement agencies say it’s more important than ever to report anything suspicious. They said they didn’t agree with the reason why the officer fired his weapon. “A toy truck!” Kinsey says to officers who have their guns drawn.

“While it may seem that this is adding more time to the process, it is indeed the process under Florida law”, Eugene said, according to The Miami Herald.

America has been rocked by protests over police killings since the shooting of Michael Brown, an unarmed black 19-year-old, in Ferguson, Missouri, in August 2014.

U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson, who represents the area, said she was in shock.

For now, the officer is on administrative leave, and state authorities are taking over the investigation.
