While there are a few exceptions, Gorilla Glass is practically synonymous with smartphones, with many large companies like Samsung and HTC using it (others like Apple don’t specify what screens they use).

Introducing the new Gorilla Glass 5, Corning said that the new Gorilla Glass version is presently available for manufacturers and designers of consumer electronics.

Almost two years after the introducing of Gorilla Glass 4, which was set to survive about 80 percent of one-meter (3.3 foot) falls, Corning has unveiled Gorilla Glass 5. “With many real-world drops occurring from between waist and shoulder height, we knew improving drop performance would be an important and necessary advancement”.

Ford announced earlier this year that the 2016 GT model will feature Gorilla glass windshields. However, Corning’s tests were conducted in a lab where phones were dropped face down.

Corning Inc is an American manufacturer of glass, ceramics, and related materials – primarily for scientific and industrial applications.

Corning notes in its release that 85 percent of smartphone owners have dropped their device at least once per year, 55 percent have dropped their device three times or more per year. Not just scratch-proof, Corning’s new Gorilla Glass 5 will make your phone virtually shatter-proof, according to the company. Gorilla Glass 4 was launched in 2014 was thinner and with a better damage resistance compared to its predecessor – Gorilla Glass 3. Among that number, 60 percent of smartphone owners have dropped their device between shoulder and waist height.

Not only will Gorilla Glass protect better from drops, but Corning also claims it should better protect against “sharp contact damage”. Gorilla Glass offers more than pure drop protection.
