Anton Yelchin Is Officially Irreplaceable in the Star Trek Franchise

Producer J.J. Abrams said Anton Yelchin’s “Star Trek” character, Pavel Chekov, will not be recast in the film franchise. Like the Fast and Furious franchise and many films before it, the rebooted intergalactic fantasy is still grappling with the very real tragedy of the death of star Anton Yelchin.

Yelchin died last month when he was crushed by his SUV after the vehicle reportedly rolled back on the driveway of his home in Los Angeles.

Star Trek Beyond hits theaters this Friday, July 22nd. When asked if they planned to kill off his character for new installments, Abrams said they have yet to decide on a tasteful way to remove Yelchin’s character. Though, they are not sure how they will move forward without the actor.

“I would say there’s no replacing him”.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Star Trek. But it’s a hard aspect to approach with sensitivity.

“I have thought about it, we’re working on it”, Abrams said, “[but]it’s too early to talk about it”. He was ultimately written out of the script before it started shooting.

“It is devastating to lose a member of your family, and we were so shocked”, Urban solemnly expressed, before his co-star Pegg jumped in.
