Since its global launch two weeks ago, Pokemon Go has sparked a worldwide frenzy among users who have taken to the streets with their smartphones.

“We wanted to build a game that would inspire people to go outside, get exercise, discover new places, and have fun with their friends”.

The launch in Japan has, expectedly, brought down the servers for the game worldwide- so if, after a few days of relative stability, you are experiencing more server errors and disconnections today, you now know why.

The free app uses satellite locations, graphics and camera capabilities to overlay cartoon monsters on real-world settings, challenging players to capture and train the creatures for battles. This is useful for finding rare Pokemon, as the site also gives just how much time trainers need before they have to catch the Pokemon or else it disappears. John Hanke, the chief of Niantic, the software developers behind the app, has stated that sponsored locations will be introduced, creating a new source of revenue for the already hugely successful game. Details of the collaboration were not released.

“To everyone in Japan: I am sorry to make you wait for so long”, said Jyunichi Masuda, the head of development at Game Freak Inc., the developer of the original Pokemon game. Sales of its most recent game console, the Wii U, disappointed in the face of fierce competition from Microsoft (MSFT, Tech30) Xbox One and Sony (SNE) PlayStation 4. It seems even players are realising the potential for money to be made because of the trendy app.
