A total of 23 medallists from Beijing 2008 produced provisional adverse analytical findings as a result of the second wave, which was predominantly focused on athletes who reached the podium in the Chinese capital.
Forty five athletes from the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and the 2012 Games in London have tested positive for banned substances after their stored anti-doping samples were re-tested.
Russian athletes have been banned from competition by athletics’ world governing body, the IAAF, because of widespread doping violations, a decision upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
The IOC will meet on Sunday to consider the punishment on Russian Federation after a new WADA report accused the country of “wide spread state sponsored doping” at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games. The IOC executive board is scheduled to hold a meeting Sunday amid calls by anti-doping bodies to exclude Russian Federation entirely from Rio.
A total of 1,243 samples have been retested so far in the first two waves of the reanalysis program. The 15 positives from London covered athletes from nine countries and two sports.
The IOC said in a statement she had tested positive for the banned substance stanozolol, an anabolic steroid. Two more rounds of reanaylsis will take place during and after the Rio Games, CNN reported.
The IOC announced the first results of retests from Beijing 2008 in May, where 31 athletes were found to have tested positive.
According to information provided by the International Olympic Committee, 23 of the 30 Provisional Adverse Analytical Findings (PAAFs) from Beijing were medalists, based on “A” samples across four different sports and eight different countries.
The IOC has not released the athletes’ names nor identified their countries.
International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said: “The new reanalysis once again shows the commitment of the International Olympic Committee in the fight against doping”.
