#SDCC16: Blair Witch Poster and Trailer Bring the Franchise Back to Life
The film horror fans have been hyping for months is indeed the sequel to beloved horror film ‘The Blair Witch Project’. Everyone we know who has seen the film has told us it is nothing short of game-changing. To us, it wasn’t even going to be part of the marketing. Though we didn’t get a lot of detail at the time, we were immediately intrigued, since it was to be the next release from director Adam Wingard and screenwriter Simon Barrett, who’d previously worked together on You’re Next and The Guest. But I think Lionsgate made a really smart decision, using that.

The sequel follows Heather Donahue’s younger brother, James as he and his friends go into the Black Hills Forest of Maryland in search of the long missing protagonist of the original film. Early word on Blair Witch is that it’s one the scariest films in years. In case you’re wondering, yes, it keeps the found footage style you know and love/possibly hate, which the original film essentially pioneered back in 1999.

It’s been nearly 20 years since that trio of wily teens got lost in the woods making a documentary about the “Blair Witch”. Slowly, they begin to realize the legend is all too real and more sinister than they could have imagined. At first the group is hopeful, especially when a pair of locals offer to act as guides through the dark and winding woods, but as the endless night wears on, the group is visited by a menacing presence. The new trailer has plenty of intensely unsettling and scary moments that feel distinctly like Wingard’s craftsmanship, and with Wingard already well into filming on his Death Note adaptation for Netflix, we may be witnessing the first movements of John Carpenter’s natural successor.
