Underwood and Holder addressed the media on Friday following the death of Cowboys basketball player Tyrek Coger, who collapsed Thursday afternoon after a 40-minute team workout inside Boone Pickens Stadium.
Cowboys coach Brad Underwood says Coger’s death is “like losing a member of the family”.
Head basketball coach Brad Underwood, athletic director Mike Holder and the entire Oklahoma State University family are again mourning a awful tragedy that has devastated one of the school’s basketball programs.
“We’re still in shock over what happened”, Shutt said. Two of those hours can be spent on the court with the rest on strength and conditioning or all eight hours can be used for workouts.
Shutt also said that under NCAA rules, basketball teams can meet for eight hours a week during the summer.
The Stillwater Fire Department was notified at 5:04 p.m.
The tragedy comes just weeks after Coger arrived on campus. It was announced that Coger’s health information can not be released due to HIPPA laws.
The Medical Examiner’s office has determined that the death of a transfer Oklahoma State basketball player was caused by a heart condition. A final autopsy report will be released after the police investigation is over, which Shutt said is “always required in an unexpected death”. It is unknown when that will be complete. “I can’t adequately address that question today about the heat and that’s certainly one of the questions we’ll ask and we’ll have a better answer than I have today down the road sometime”.
Holder said Oklahoma State’s workouts are left largely to the strength and conditioning staff, which was overseeing Thursday’s drills.
Though Coger had only been a member of the team for 17 days, Underwood was emotional during the press conference.
Underwood was traveling home from a recruiting trip in Las Vegas on Thursday, per the OSU release.
