The state’s jobless rate decreased from 6.4 percent in May, largely because more people left the workforce.
Missouri’s unemployment rate also went up to 4.5 percent in June from 4.3 percent last month. Employment in much more populous IL has grown by 41,300, or 0.7 percent over the same period.
Merced County’s rate was 10.6 percent in June, lower than the 10.8 percent posted in June 2015, according to the state Employment Development Department. “If the numbers survive revision, June demonstrates how stability in the public sector can buoy otherwise lackluster job growth”.
The rate has steadily been on the decline, and the June unemployment numbers mark the lowest rate since 2007.
The leisure and hospitality sector reported the largest increase in Maryland, adding 6,100 jobs. But it’s above the roughly 2 percent that has occurred for most of the seven-year recovery from the Great Recession. At the same time, new claims for Unemployment Insurance were 49,975 in June compared with 42,929 in May and 45,591 in June of previous year. The state’s jobless rate had been edging up each month since then, but it happened in tandem with growth in labor force participation, suggesting more people were trying to get back to work.
In a broader state survey of employers, several industry sectors reported significant increases in the number of jobs in Fresno County, led by a gain of 1,000 jobs in manufacturing. “Four important things stand out in sharp relief: The employment gains in June are very strong; it’s hard to beat the biggest single private sector job creation month since 1996”.

Looking a few months backward, the news in Kansas had been upbeat in June, when the state also added some jobs, after being very downbeat in May, April and March. The state has only gained 29,400 jobs since January 2016, putting IL on pace for 58,800 jobs gained on the year. This included about 100 farm jobs and about 700 non-farm jobs. Construction jobs increased by 2,100 jobs in one month and there was a 12-month increase in nonfarm jobs at 47,800.
