Royals power AL to All-Star victory

Here’s the game’s demographic breakdown, which shows that younger viewers would rather do just about anything else besides watch a midsummer exhibition baseball game on television.

Shortly after Yoan Moncada hit a go-ahead, two-run home run for the World in the All-Star Futures Game, the Boston Red Sox farmhand found out that the Hall of Fame requested his bat to put on display.

“I felt like a proud papa there in the second inning after those two guys gave us the lead, and I was really excited”, Royals manager Ned Yost said. Astros reliever Will Harris struck out St. Louis’ Aledmys Diaz with two runners on to end the eighth, and Baltimore’s Zach Britton closed it out in his native Southern California.

Last year, Hosmer scored the game-tying run in the ninth inning for the Royals in their decisive Game 5 victory over the New York Mets in the World Series. Reasonable minds can debate whether or not a single July game should determine something so important (most seem to agree it shouldn’t), but that’s the deal once again this season.

David Ortiz found himself in the middle of the most touching moment at Petco Park, embraced by his AL teammates near first base after exiting his final All-Star Game.

Cleveland Indians ace Corey Kluber earned the win after tossing a shutout second inning with one strikeout. Cueto is 13-1 for San Francisco this year, so his loss total has unofficially doubled.

The AL took the lead for good when a pair of Royals went deep against a former teammate. Ortiz, who is retiring after this season at age 40, was embraced by his American League teammates near first base after he exited the game following a walk. The “lone wolf”, Remigio Peireira, has been dismissed from the group until further notice, The Tenors announced. Just before this first pitch, commissioner Rob Manfred joined Rod Carew, his family and the family of late Padres great Tony Gwynn and named the batting titles after the two Hall of Famers, giving Gwynn the NL honor and Carew the AL championship. Gwynn’s family was present and received a standing ovation, as did Carew.

Hosmer added and RBI single in the third, and the American Heritage (Plantation) alum, who grew up in Cooper City, took the MVP award in his first All-Star appearance.
