Texans defensive star Watt has back surgery

The Texans are confident J.J. Watt will be back in time for the season opner. Watt is expected to start camp at full strength after spending much of the offseason recovering from groin surgery. That would see Watt miss two regular season games.

Right now there are questions about the recovery timeline for the Texans stud.

The three-time Defensive Player of the Year will begin training camp on the physically unable to perform list. Bell is fighting the ban, something he did a year ago and got the suspension reduced from three games to two. That’s more than any other player during that same time frame.

John McClain of the Houston Chronicle first reported the surgery news on Twitter, saying Watt should be ready for the season.

Watt had the surgery to fix a herniated disc, according to one report.

Watt, who wasn’t expected to play in the upcoming preseason, anyway, suffered an elbow injury in 2012 and didn’t play in a preseason game.

He also has played just under 25 snaps in preseason games over the last four seasons, while winning National Football League defensive player of the years three times.
