Trump accepts Republican nomination, promises voters ‘safety’

“Tonight, I want every American whose demands for immigration security have been denied – and every politician who has denied them – to listen very closely to the words I am about to say”, Trump said.

Those remarks – and Trump’s campaign – cuts against numerous policies Republicans have run on in recent decades, like free trade and an active USA military presence overseas. But he would’ve paid a political price, too, if he got a reputation as a man who shrugged off malicious attacks on his family – Trump had insulted his wife and his father – for the sake of elections.

This week was meant to be the time for the entire conservative movement to join the Trump tribe and charge headlong into battle, united against the woman they loathe, Hillary Clinton. On the convention stage, however, Cruz did what he always has.

Cruz didn’t tell the convention crowd that he plans to vote for Trump. But he said Cruz “didn’t honor” the pledge that Republican primary candidates had made to support the eventual GOP nominee. “They’re so honest. They’re such honorable people”.

LISA DESJARDINS: As he finished, Cruz was booed off the stage. At the top of the list: Unifying a fractured party and quieting Americans’ concerns about his preparedness for the presidency.

Governor Christie told New Jersey delegates that his speech showed why Ted Cruz is the most disliked person in either party.

Mr. Cruz was not thinking about the thousands of delegates and millions of voters who backed Mr. Trump. And so I can understand why there’s still some hesitation, but, again, it’s a decision of conscience. Cause you know, they’re true.

Donald Trump had a big job to do Thursday night, but of course big jobs are what he does for a living – so it’s really no surprise that he got it done. beautifully.

Ted Cruz addresses the crowd at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, but got booed when it became clear he wouldn’t be endorsing Donald Trump. So, I agree with Paul Manafort [Trump campaign manager], this is a uniting factor that the Cruz faction is Donald Trump was so magnanimous in allowing him to speak and what did he do.

Trump’s speech was generally well received by members of the Texas delegation, even some Cruz loyalists. And that pledge wasn’t a blanket commitment that if you go and slander and attack Heidi, that I’m going to nonetheless come like a servile puppy dog and say thank you very much for maligning my wife and maligning my father. Donald Trump Jr. said that they said that they saw Cruz’s address ahead of time, adding that they chose to let the Texas senator address the convention in the interests of party unity.

In a slew of emails to supporters Thursday, she spoke of a loving dad who encouraged his young daughter to succeed, of an inspirational leader and a crack negotiator destined to win.

This convention has been notable for the awkward lukewarmness with which party leaders have treated Trump. The America First Committee, founded by Charles Lindbergh, campaigned to keep the U.S. out of World War II. Though some seats in the Quicken Loans Arena were still empty, it was far fuller than it had been earlier this week. Kasich hasn’t endorsed, but many of his allies had signaled they were going to help Trump – and now say they’re going to sit on their hands this election.

“Tonight, Donald Trump painted a dark picture of an America in decline”.

While Trump was successful in systematizing his campaign message – the Republican National Committee adopted his isolationist positions in its official party platform – he is unlikely to benefit from the optics of the week, which highlighted seething fissures in the party’s ranks during a phase of the campaign when nominees typically enjoy a bump in the polls.
