In the NY case, two conditions also existed that increased the likelihood of sexual transmission.
Until now, scientists believed it was only possible for men to spread Zika through sexual contact.
To limit any potential spread of Zika virus via mosquitoes, health officials on the federal, state and local level are deploying a three-pronged strategy: improving mosquito control; expanding their ability to test for Zika; and urging the public to protect themselves against mosquitoes.
Women are capable of passing a Zika infection to their male sexual partners, according to new research released Friday. The following day the woman developed Zika symptoms such as tingling in toes and fingers, numbness, muscle plain and fatigue, rash and fever.
CDC recommends that all pregnant women who have a sex partner who has traveled to or lives in an area with Zika use barrier methods every time they have sex or not have sex during the pregnancy.
In the report, researchers found that a man, who is in his 20s and did not travel outside the United States during the year before his illness, contracted the virus after one instance of vaginal intercourse, without a condom, with a woman who had recently returned from a country where the virus is endemic.
Here’s yet another reason to practice safe sex: The first case of female-to-male case of sexually transmitted Zika virus has been confirmed in New York City, according to Gothamist. It was previously known that the virus could be transmitted by unprotected sexual intercourse, but only male-to-female and male-to-male cases were reported. In a report issued last month, doctors said a 24-year-old Parisian woman came down with Zika symptoms after having sex seven times with a 46-year-old man. The man had developed Zika symptoms just before leaving Brazil and arriving in Paris last February. Miami-Dade leads all counties with 84 cases reported; Broward has 43.
It’s unclear how much virus was in her vaginal fluids, but animal models have shown that the virus can be present in those secretions.
Current guidance to prevent sexual transmission of zika virus is based on the assumption that transmission occurs from a male partner to a receptive partner.

The virus, which causes birth defects, has been reported in dozens of countries, mostly concentrated in South and Central America.
