Miami Marlins beat sloppy Reds again, go for series sweep on Sunday

Giancarlo Stanton served notice.

Stanton didn’t make the All-Star team but will compete in the Home Run Derby.

Brandon Phillips, who is playing with a hairline fracture in his left hand, had an RBI single on Saturday and is 7-for-15 during his four-game hitting streak.

“A lot”, he said. “This is when everything comes together when you’ve got to make your push and see who’s going to peel off and who’s going to keep going”.

Fernandez wasn’t the only All-Star who pitched for Miami on Friday, however.

This is the ninth time the Marlins have finished the first half of a season above.500, the first since 2009 (46-44, .511).

Ramos is second in Marlins history in most saves before the All-Star break.

“Press on the gas, man”, Stanton said. His fifth homer in five games came off 1-2 slider Cody Reed. Stanton will face Seattle Mariners star Robinson Cano, who won the event in 2011.

“We needed a couple of things to go right that potentially could have brought that game to a different outcome”, manager Bryan Price said. I hope he hits some monumental ones, some really long ones.

Jose Fernandez took a trip to the mall on Friday morning in preparation for next week’s All-Star Game in San Diego. Suzuki is 10 hits shy of 3,000 for his major-league career.

“I think you could have picked anybody in the stands and put them in right field a month ago. I looked back up and it wasn’t where I thought it was going to be”. He is hitting.235.The Marlins (47-41) swept the Reds (32-57) for the first time since 2003.Miami’s Mike Dunn (1-1), who set a franchise reliever record with his 369th appearance, earned the win. In fact, he’s had back to back solid offensive performances, and on Sunday he came up with the biggest hit of the day for the Cincinnati Reds (albeit in yet another loss). Catcher Tucker Barnhart appeared to get crossed up, and the ball glanced off his glove and his shin guard before rolling 30 feet into foul territory.Miami had never previously scored on a two-base passed ball.It was also the second time in two games that a Reds catcher has been crossed up by his pitcher, resulting in a passed ball and a run.The Reds’ fourth inning was similar to the first.

The bullpen put the hammer down over the final five innings, holding the Reds to two hits. Overall, Reed has logged an 0-3 record with a 1.85 WHIP and 9.00 ERA over 20 innings.

Which begs the question of just how good all-time wise can this team finish the first half of this surprising 2016 season? Almost every pitcher in the pen saw action in the win.

Miami center fielder Marcell Ozuna threw out Phillips trying to advance from first to third on a single in the seventh.

The next batter, Brandon Phillips, singled up the middle, but Marlins second baseman Derek Dietrich kept the ball in the infield with a diving backhand stop.
