Watt will be placed on the physically unable to perform list at the start of training camp.

Watt wasn’t expected to play in any preseason games and likely would have received fewer reps during training camp this offseason.

On JJ Watt’s back surgery: I’m told the recovery time is 6-8 weeks & it happened very recently. Among his ailments last season was a herniated disk, in addition to a broken hand and several torn core muscles.

The Texans kick off their season in eight weeks, on September 11 at home against the Chicago Bears. He had surgery abdominal surgery in January. That would see Watt miss two regular season games. This is Watt’s second surgery in six months.

The Houston Texans play the Chicago Bears, Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots in the first three weeks of the regular season.

The week 3 prime time game might not feature the best offensive player (Brady) or defensive player (Watt) in the league, which is probably not what the NFL signed up for when they scheduled this match-up. The Houston Texans’ defensive end had surgery on Wednesday to fix a herniated disc.
