And now Sky Sports claim the Ivory Coast global defender is in Glasgow undergoing a medical ahead of a move to Celtic Park.

Should the deal go through, Toure would be available for the third round Champions League qualifier against Astana in Kazakhstan next week.

Toure, who worked under Brendan Rodgers at Anfield, would be Celtic’s second summer signing after the arrival of Moussa Dembele. Despite Jurgen Klopp’s men losing 3-1 to Seville, the veteran produced a gritty display that led to many citing him as the showpiece’s outstanding performer.

Toure joined Arsenal in 2002, becoming part of the “Invincibles” side that went unbeaten as they claimed the Premier League title in 2004.

Rogers last week heaped praise on the Ivorian, he said: “He is a fantastic guy, who was brilliant for me”. We want players here who can contribute and we are working to try and make that happen.

“He was an African Nations’ victor and definitely a big-game player”.

“Apart from the six-hour flight, and the five-hour time difference and the 35 degree heat and the plastic pitch with no water, it should be all right”, stated Rodgers in one of the best quotes of this fledgling season.
