Ohio offers sales tax holiday for back-to-school shopping

That means more expensive things like laptops are not included, unlike Florida, where computers up to $750 are eligible for the tax break.

Many other questions about the tax holiday can be answered by going to a “Frequently Asked Questions” document posted at the Ohio Department of Taxation’s website.

However, the sales tax holiday may reverse that.

Not all locations in states with a tax holiday will participate and county taxes may still be applicable.

Any items purchased in theme parks, entertainment complexes, public lodging establishments, or airports are also not exempt. Along with beefed-up staffing, many retailers are offering extended hours for shoppers to take advantage of sales.

Items that may be needed to prepare for an emergency, priced at $60 or less each, will be exempt from sales tax; examples include batteries, flashlights, bottled water, tarps, duct tape, fire extinguishers, cell-phone chargers, smoke detectors, buckets, rope and first aid kits.

“This is a convenient and easy way for South Carolina citizens to get back-to-school items, such as clothing and electronics, for less than they would typically pay”, Reames said. On top of the clearance items they were looking at, the no-tax savings were a temptation they couldn’t resist. The ten-day sales tax holiday is the longest since Florida started the program.

Last year, she said the sales tax holiday cost state and local governments about $3.4 million in revenue.

The sales tax holiday bill cleared the House 136-20 and the Senate 27-11.

A family with children in grade school will spend an average of $630 this year for back-to-school supplies, according to a release by The National Retail Federation.
