Star Trek Beyond Review: Goes Beyond Expectations
It’s certainly possible that this discarded scene could end up on the Blu-ray and/or DVD release of Star Trek Beyond later this year, but we’ll have to wait and see.

With the Fast and the Furious films, Lin showed himself as a sure hand with ensemble casts, and sure enough one of the major strengths of Star Trek Beyond is the effortless flow of chemistry between the Starfleet crew (and its new allies).
Just head to your local picturehouse and feast your eyes on the Enterprise’s latest adventure. First, though, the USS Enterprise docks for R&R at the interstellar space station Yorktown, which looks like a city-state that M.C. Escher might have designed after studying a gyroscope. The designs of the space station are detailed and impressive and it makes for a solid setpiece for a major action sequence later in the film. The crew must head into an unexplored nebula to assess the situation and help this frightened woman. With the crew stranded on a unknown planet and with no apparent means of rescue, they find themselves in conflict with a new ruthless enemy who has a well-earned hatred of the Federation and what it stands for. She will prove most useful. Though I will say it was refreshing that they didn’t try to force a romance between her and any of the Enterprise crew members (at least not yet). “I have no idea, I have no idea”, Pine said when asked what to expect from the film. The script co-written by Simon Pegg (who also returns as Enterprise engineer Scotty) nods fondly to the past while also pushing the franchise forward. Like the series’ famous tagline “To boldly go where no one has gone before”.
“And while we were in Vancouver, he was trying to get us to go so some German neo-expressionist film that everyone has or should have seen”.
JD Payne and Patrick McKay will write the screenplay for the new movie; both are listed as uncredited writers on Star Trek Beyond, which launches tomorrow, July 22.
Director Justin Lin agrees that the premise of an extended mission affords the characters a new level of introspection. Sadly, that question doesn’t really get explored through the course of the film.
Kraal, despite the usually strong performance from Elba, is less all-powerful than he at first seems and there’s nothing really jaw-dropping in the entire two hours (though seeing Leonard Nimoy in a photo as well as the last performance from Anton Yelchin, who died in June, does add a sense of sadness and loss). Watching Star Trek it instilled in me that family is not just blood, it’s through shared experience. This particular screening had the score provided by the San Diego Symphony Orchestra, who played so well that I completely forgot it was being provided live.
Therefore, the fourth “Star Trek” movie will take advantage of time travel.
“With James Horner’s work on it”, says the actor, “it’s among the most beloved of all the Star Trek movies”.

Star Trek Beyond’s relatively straightforward, self-contained plot makes it feel like a super-sized episode of the classic TV series, but that’s precisely why it’s so entertaining. That’s what Abrams tried to do in his two films, and the underrated “Star Trek Into Darkness“, though it played a bit of a shell game with “Trek” mythology, casting Benedict Cumberbatch as a young Khan who didn’t completely parse as the Khan of legend, was still a movie that took you on a sinister cosmic joyride.
