Simmons was one of six law enforcement officers who were shot by Gavin Eugene Long of Kansas City, Missouri. Police say he was seeking out law enforcement and ambushed them, wounding three other officers before he was killed in the latest in a string of violent incidents involving police. Tensions rose sharply after the death of Sterling, 37, a black man killed by white Baton Rouge officers after a scuffle at a convenience store.

Karama has described himself as a hip-hop artist and community activist. “Now it’s time for politicians and government to assist us in working in the communities we have always worked in to make life better for all Americans”. “And the way the current system is set up, it protects all cops whether good or bad, right or wrong, instead of punishing bad cops & holding them accountable for their actions”.

A website, social media accounts and YouTube videos that appeared tied to Long include complaints about police treatment of black people and praise for killings of the Dallas policemen. “To the rest of my family and other officers please watch your 6 and God please watch over them”.

As for the violence Long unleashed, Horad said, “I really don’t get it; unless you are ready to die, you don’t take on the police”.

Documents also showed that Long pledged affiliation to an African-American offshoot of the USA anti-government Sovereign Citizen Movement.

Authorities say Long stalked Baton Rouge police before ambushing a handful of them.

“There is no doubt whatsoever that these officers were targeted and assassinated, ” said Louisiana State Police Col. Mike Edmonson. Sterling was buried just last Friday.

A day after his killing, another black man, Philando Castile, 32, was shot to death by a policeman during a traffic stop near St. Paul, Minnesota.

According to law enforcement officials, Long was carrying a Washitaw Nation membership card during the shooting.

Chuck Canterbury, president of the Fraternal Order of Police, welcomed Obama’s letter and said law enforcement can not be held responsible for such issues as poverty, unemployment or lack of mental health services, a point the president touched on in the letter.

The officers lived in the area of Denham Springs, a quiet bedroom community across the Amite River from Baton Rouge, which has been in turmoil for two weeks.

The president recalled how several of the officers who were shot dead were protecting protesters who may not have been fond of the police. However, the process was never completed by Long, court officials said.

Obama met with Attorney General Loretta Lynch, FBI Director James Comey and Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson in the Oval Office. Col. Robert Williams, Chief of the Maine State Police, said Monday that troopers are being more careful because they’re more anxious.

Dabadie said that a couple of days before the shooting, he was talking to the department’s officers, “trying to lift their spirits”.
