The Celtics drafted Green 18th overall in the 2005 draft before including him in the Kevin Garnett trade in 2007.

Athletic wing Gerald Green will join the Celtics on a one-year contract at the veteran’s minimum, according to multiple reports.

The financial terms of the deal have not yet been reported.

The former dunk champion has played for eight teams during his nine National Basketball Association seasons, most recently for the Heat in 2015-16. He shot 40 percent from 3-point range last season for the Miami Heat, providing an additional shooter who can be a versatile defender, an excellent fit for coach Brad Stevens. In 2013-14 as a member of the Phoenix Suns, Green notched almost 16 points per contest. The 7-foot center started only three games after playing in 82 games with 59 starts the previous season when he averaged 10.2 points and 5.7 rebounds.

Green could eventually be used as a trade piece, with Sporting News reporting that the Celtics are still active on the trade market. Bringing Green on board provides the Celtics with more depth from which to deal if they choose to. If they can add Horford and another star to the roster this offseason, they could quickly challenge for one of the top spots in the East.
