Some protesters, too, had praise for the police during the opening days of the convention.

I don’t think it matters much what Trump says Thursday night.

“We were accused of not being prepared, but I think the proof is in the pudding”, Mayor Frank Jackson said. McIver said she later included the passages in the speech she wrote for Mrs. Trump.

Cleveland police officers and law enforcement from across the country are getting rave reviews for keeping the peace during the Republican National Convention, and the leadership of Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams has been shining under the spotlight.

Police did not identify any of those arrested Wednesday.

In explaining how the melee unfolded, police chief said that a protester whose trousers caught fire resisted when a police officer tried to put out the blaze.

Members of the Revolutionary Communist Party, which organized the flag-burning, denied someone’s clothes had caught fire.

Chief Calvin Williams said at a Friday news briefing that out-of-town officers were key contributors to Cleveland’s successful performance as convention host. A number of “Bikers for Trump” moved through the throngs, escorting a Republican delegate in the direction of her hotel while a man with a loudspeaker taunted anti-Trump protesters, one of whom was yelling, “America was never great”.

Police said Thursday a Georgia state trooper was treated and released, and a Cleveland officer was still being treated.

The vice presidential nominee on Thursday was reacting to Trump’s comments that if Russian Federation attacked the Baltic States, he would consider defending them only after reviewing whether those nations “have fulfilled their obligations to us”.

The protest by a group called Stand Together Against Trump drew little notice outside a heavy police presence.

“Basically, we’re on 12 hour shifts, and then maybe a couple of extra hours, but basically 12 hours for everybody”, Chief Williams told Rare, adding, “Our overall mission is to keep everybody safe” during this major political convention.

They formed barriers across the square to separate protest groups amid scattered shouting matches and scuffles.

An anti-Donald Trump march is underway in Cleveland on the fourth and final day of the Republican National Convention. Sunsara Taylor says members are being illegally detained to prevent them from protesting. According to the police scanner, officers planned to charge the unidentified suspect with assault of a police officer. The bicycle officers have literally kept protesters in line, turning their bikes sideways to keep opposing protest groups apart.

Police, however, believe tonight could be the largest night of demonstrations, as Donald Trump is scheduled to deliver his speech accepting the Republican Party’s nomination for president later in the evening. In the run-up to the convention, some law enforcement authorities had feared hundreds of arrests every day.

In the immediate aftermath of the skirmish, Hashime Hill, 16, of Cleveland, expressed anger toward police because he thought police had shown up only to arrest people for burning the flag.

As of Thursday afternoon, a total of 23 arrests have been made, largely for misdemeanors such as failure to disperse and disorderly conduct.
