And Pence could get knocked out of the news if something unexpected happens at a convention not lacking in surprises and short on message discipline.

Regardless of who becomes the party’s nominee, Republicans don’t see themselves at a disadvantage in November.

Pence has gotten his biggest response from crowds in making the case against Clinton, and that’s likely to be the case again Wednesday.

The audience, built largely of conservative thought leaders and activists, represented the natural constituency of Pence, who has been fighting alongside them in politics for three decades.
