So many times whilst watching did I find myself impressed by just how clearly and interestingly the action played out on screen. I think Better Luck Tomorrow [the Sundance indie that put him on the map] was more observational. Given the broad cultural impact this widely loved franchise is capable of exerting, though, and the clear intent to make a statement with the scene in question, the restrictive classification assigned below seems necessary as a warning, if nothing else. The mere fact that the uncertainty of what lies ahead has become so banal for Kirk is a meta statement, considering Star Trek ‘s 50-year journey, including several television renditions and 13 films, Star Trek can hardly keep delivering punch after punch. Should the $60 million estimate hold, “Star Trek Beyond” would have the ninth largest domestic opening of 2016. the film is also releasing in 37 markets internationally, representing 46% of the movie’s ultimate global footprint with launches in the UK, Australia, Russia and Germany. That film premiered at Sundance, where it was the focus of headlines after Roger Ebert stood on a chair during a Q&A and yelled at a man who criticized it for depicting Asians unflatteringly. Fox’s fifth iteration of its “Ice Age” franchise with “Ice Age: Collision Course” comes four years after “Ice Age: Continental Drift” taking in $161 million in the USA and an astounding $715 million internationally. “I needed other challenges”. Star Trek Beyond, the third movie in the series that began with J.J. Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek, has a comparatively smaller-scale plot than its predecessors, with a villain whose evil plan is more contained. Abrams, who would remain involved as a producer, encouraged Lin to “boldly go” wherever he wanted with the story – and so, working under a tight timetable, Abrams and cowriters Simon Pegg and Doug Jung literally and figuratively blew up much of the franchise. He does give us one bravura set piece, the layer-by-layer dissection and eventual “sinking” of the Enterprise. The characters finally feel like they care about each other. Holy depth perception! Star Trek Beyond is probably one of the best usages of spatial reasoning and the illusion of depth that I’ve seen all year.
