The 31-year-old sent down 14 aces and lost only three points on his first serve as he coasted through the second-round encounter in just 63 minutes. She will play Camila Giorgi, who received a walk over.

Monfils will next face Querrey in the quarterfinals. Ranked 58th, she is out of the world top 50 for the first time since 2008. “Some players will be happy; some people would prefer other spots”.

“He’ll tell you this much: He was playing pretty poorly the first five months of the year”.

After playing doubles past midnight and getting to sleep at about 3 a.m., Steve Johnson was less than thrilled to be playing in the first Citi Open men’s match in the main stadium at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Meanwhile Duckworth struggled to handle big-serving American John Isner, winning just nine points on return in the 6-3 6-4 loss.

Neither victor faced a break point. Isner won 80 percent of the points on his serve to move past the Cypriot in straight sets. “I don’t know if I’ll ever try to lob him again and it’ll work, but luckily it worked today”.

I’ve changed some motions with my legs.

I trust my serve and the court is fast so I can switch from my defense to attack.

A three-time runner-up, including past year in Washington, Isner sent down 14 aces in a 6-3 6-4 victory over James Duckworth.

Three-time Washington runner-up Isner next faces USA fifth seed Steve Johnson, who ousted American qualifier Ryan Harrison 6-4, 6-4.

The ranking is “great, but it’s not the end of the road for me”, Johnson said. “This is an extremely tough match”.

Neither has won the Washington hardcourt crown.

“Still the number one is John”, Monfils said. I don’t know how I got this thing.

I’ve got to focus on my game.

Johnson will now face Ivo Karlovic in the semi-finals of the ATP 500 event after the Croatian was too good for Jack Sock 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (8-6).

“To win here would be very special”, Isner said. This will be the third year in a row that Americans Johnson and Isner meet in Washington; Johnson won in 2014, and Isner did in 2015, both decided by a third-set tiebreaker.

“My serve got me out of some trouble”. No. 5 seed Sam Querrey held off Alexandr Dolgopolov 7-6 (5), 6-3.

Zverev, 19, matched his Washington run previous year by beating Tunisia’s Malek Jaziri 6-2, 5-7, 6-2.

Also exiting the tournament was Serbian Viktor Troicki, who was humbled by American qualifier Ryan Harrison 7-6 (7-4) 6-4.

Ozaki ousted defending champion and second seed Sloane Stephens in her opening match.

On the women’s side in Washington, American Lauren Davis cruised past third-seed Monica Puig 6-4, 6-2 to reach the final eight. Sabine Lisicki, Germany, 6-3, 6-3.

“I’ll take it and try to run with it as far as I can”, said Stosur, who faces USA wildcard Jessica Pegula in the quarter-finals.
