Gay’s arc will focus on Ayo and Aneka, the two ex-Dora Milaje lovers who have abandoned their oath to Black Panther and gone rogue, operating in experimental Wakandan power suits as the Midnight Angels. Ta-Nehisi Coates, the man behind Marvel’s acclaimed and best-selling Black Panther, has tapped Bad Feminist and An Untamed State author Roxane Gay to cowrite Black Panther: World of Wakanda. So when Marvel wanted to expand the universe, Coates knew that the story should be about women – and he knew exactly which women should write it. Alitha Martinez is the illustrator, and Yona Harvey and Afua Richardson will co-write and illustrate, respectively, a special “backup” story that will appear in the series’ debut issue. Between Coates, Gay, and Harvey, Marvel is also upping its efforts to recruit more diverse writers to script these characters. This confirms earlier reports of the film beginning production in early 2017 so that it could be ready for its release in 2018. “It’s not, ‘Wouldn’t it be nice if there are more women writers, more women creators in comics?’ That would be nice, but in many ways, it is kind of an imperative”. There are some preview pages of Black Panther: World of Wakanda floating around now and they look pretty fantastic.
