Brees says no contract talks with Saints in three months

Drew Brees says his contract negotiations are not going the way he expected. He’s now entering the final year of that deal, and while he’ll earn $19.75 million in base salary in 2016, his salary-cap hit is a whopping $30 million.

According to Saints beat writer and National Football League nation reporter Mike Triplett of espn.com, Brees’ agent and New Orleans GM Mickey Loomis has not spoken about Brees’ deal in over 3 months. “They made an offer in March, we made an offer shortly thereafter. And besides the Josh Norman deal (when Sean Payton approached Brees about a pay cut to make room for Norman in New Orleans), there has been no talk about a contract since”.

“I would say the deadline is the start of the regular season, not training camp”, Brees told Triplett. So if a deal isn’t done by Week 1, it will have to wait until the end of the year, when he is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent.

While we’re less than one week away from training camp sessions to begin at The Greenbrier in West Virginia, we know that we’re in for some very exciting position battles for the black and gold. Since then, his $20 million average has been passed up 11 times – including twice by Flacco.

The 37-year-old Brees was confident last month of a new contract coming from Saints. He led the National Football League with 4,870 passing yards last season, and has led in that category in four of the last five years-he finished second in 2013.

Brees’ age may be working against him when compared to younger star quarterbacks.
