Virat Kohli became the first Indian captain to score a double century overseas as the visitors took firm control of the first Test against the West Indies with a solid batting display here.

Saving the follow-on, the primary target for West Indies was now looking an increasingly diminishing possibility.

Resuming the day on 31 for one, the Caribbean side were bundled out for 243 in reply to India’s massive 566 for eight declared, to trail by 323 runs on first innings at the Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium.

India bowler Mohammed Shami said his hard work paid off after making a stunning Test comeback against West Indies.

And if the hosts were entertaining any thoughts of a late fightback, they were squashed by the ebullient Yadav who first dismissed Roston Chase and then removed the obdurate Kraigg Brathwaite with a beauty.

Mohammad Shami and Umesh Yadav left the batsmen tottering with their pace and sharp bounce, picking up four wickets apiece.

They crashed to 144 for seven in the final session but the 24-year-old Dowrich stroked a classy unbeaten 57 and captain Jason Holder hit a fluent 36 to prop up the innings. They kept losing wickets at regular intervals.

“It was a decent knock in the first innings but I would have loved to go on”, said Brathwaite at the close of play. But the inevitable finally happened as Amit Mishra got the breakthrough by luring Bishoo, and the middle-order got ran through by Shami and Yadav.

India immediately sent their opponents back in and were quickly among the wickets again with Kraigg Brathwaite trapped lbw by Ishant Sharma in the first over. Bravo and Rajendra Chandrika survived until stumps but West Indies will need a miracle to even take the Test into day five.

Bravo (11) then came to the crease, and he looked solid there albeit only for a short while.

Kohli, with his brilliant knock off 281 deliveries, is now tied with Mohammad Azharuddin for most centuries (5) by an Indian captain overseas.
