Star Trek Beyond dodges the curse of misfiring odd-numbered films in the series, but the flaws are obvious. But the one thing they definitely won’t do, he revealed, is recast the role of Ensign Pavel Chekov with a new actor.

Leonard Nimoy played Spock in the Star Trek series.

“Anton Yelchin should be here”, Abrams said, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Anton Yelchin’s Chekov in the “Star Trek” film franchise showed a “cherubic charm who inspired huge affection”.

J.J. wouldn’t say if the next Star Trek film, which was recently announced, would feature the death of Anton’s character.

The cast and crew were also spotted wearing black Star Trek command lapel pins on the red carpet, in Anton’s honour.

27-year-old Yelchin died in a tragic accident on June 19 when his SUV rolled back down his driveway and crushed him against the gate of his home in Studio City. “I was grateful to have somewhere to put that”.

With Abrams serving as one of the film’s producers, the directorial reins have been handed to Justin Lin, best known as the director of three movies in the “Fast and Furious” franchise of action thrillers: “Fast & Furious“, “Fast Five”, and “Fast & Furious 6″.

On a slightly lighter note, Star Trek 4 is a few years away yet, which allowed the cast to speculate on a potential future storyline.
