Yankees lose heartbreaker to Giants, 2-1, in 12 innings

Do they run up the white flag and shed as numerous bloated contracts on their payroll as possible in exchange for prospects unlikely to do much for them this season, and possibly not for several seasons to come, if ever?

This time, NY will hope for a more productive showing and if they can’t get a big day at the plate, the Yankees will hope to be as opportunistic as they were Friday.

But the Yankees bounced back for the fifth win in six games, and didn’t need to hit the ball hard to do it thanks to Crawford.

Giants Gold Glove shortstop Brandon Crawford made three errors for the first time in his career, with his wild throw in the eighth inning giving the Yankees a 3-2 win Friday night that sent San Francisco to its season-worst sixth straight loss.

“He’s as good as there is and just had a tough night”, Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.

Johnny Cueto allowed just an unearned run in six innings, giving up six hits and a walk while striking out nine.

The Giants have committed 10 errors in the six losses – something that must change regardless of any deals the front office is able to swing before the August 1 trade deadline.

“I thought his cutter was good, I thought his split was good”, Girardi said. Right now, it’s not going well for us.

“I want these guys walking in tomorrow with their heads up ready to go, just like I will”. San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey is at right. “I got to do a better job, ” McCann said. So, we’re facing some adversity, but nothing we haven’t seen before.

Nobody could have foreseen a three-error game from Crawford, who had committed just five prior to Friday. The one that hurt came after the Yankees greeted left-hander Josh Osich with a single and a walk, and Austin Romine hit a slow roller up the middle.

Andrew Miller threw a ideal 10-pitch eighth after throwing 32 pitches on Friday.

“I think the leadoff walk frustrates you more, and the wild pitch [rather than the hit]”, Betances said.

The close plays are not going the Giants’ way, either. Headley kept running and beat Belt’s throw home.

Why did Blanco try to score on a borderline fly ball with the Giants down 2-0?

“We pitched well, but we didn’t hit”, Carlos Beltran said. They have one of the best pitching staffs in all of baseball, have a legit offense, and they know how to win. “We’ve got to tighten up and play crisper ball”.

Mac Williamson homered in the fifth inning and hit a tiebreaking single in the 12th, lifting visiting San Francisco over the New York Yankees 2-1 on Saturday for the Giants’ first victory since the All-Star break.

Besides the defense, the Giants have struggled in the clutch.

Giants ace Madison Bumgarner gave up two runs in seven innings. He is 0-1 with a 6.92 ERA versus NY and has labored in interleague play with a 3-9 record and 5.28 ERA.Moved to the bullpen following a four-start losing streak, Eovaldi made three relief appearances before returning to the rotation and limiting Baltimore to one run on four hits over 5 1/3 innings on Tuesday.

NY loaded the bases in the tenth, but left them loaded after a bunt by Jacoby Ellsbury and outs by Brian McCann and Castro. Pinch hitter Mac Williamson’s game-tying double in the eighth off Andrew Miller was their only hit in nine at-bats with runners in scoring position and San Francisco is 7-for-51 in those situations during this skid. Gregor Blanco hit a leadoff double against Chapman in the ninth, turning around a 101 miles per hour fastball, but the Giants couldn’t advance him.
